Maxfield - Boondoggle

For our final release of 2023, we’re pleased to present the newest work from Boston based producer and close friend of The Rust, Maxfield – a 4-track uptempo EP titled Boondoggle. This release continues his testament to versatility, blending acoustic instrumentation with mechanical sound design – exemplifying the depth of his understanding of the craft through extraordinary musicality and creative mind.

Maxfield's repertoire covers a wide range of grooves and emotional landscapes, and a formal release from the high-energy end of the spectrum is long overdue. Boondoggle draws inspiration not only from dance floor energy, but also from the world of animals and nature – the mind-crushing awesomeness of which is enough to send even the strongest of us into a verklempt tizzy.

When we last crossed paths, the stoic producer and multi-instrumentalist Devin Kroes was on the heels of his Breathe EP, a cinematic and energetic three-track collection. Two years later, and he’s put the finishing touches on the fruit of an altogether more intensive labor; with The Rust Music serving as home base for his latest release, he’s pulling back the curtain on his arduous and expansive ten-track LP, There Is Growth Here

Brimming with attitude and sharp tonality, There is Growth Here maneuvers from end to end with clear compositional intention; each track is the launchpad for the subsequent song, easily blending the berth of styles housed under one umbrella. With psychedelia and psybient fundamentals abound, this latest spate of tracks showcase rhythms ranging from scintillating and groovy downtempo through to elevated drum and bass, all the while showing off Kroes’ penchant and skill with latin riffs and six-string leads, tying the knot on a marked infusion of world-music into his established palette. With style, finesse, and clear compositional confidence, Taking its spot as the 78th Rust Music release, the There Is Growth Here LP hits every mark and then some, and we’re exceptionally excited to offer the record in both digital and vinyl formats.

Sheesh – Subconscious

Riding low and slow from Atlanta, Georgia, the stalwart producer Sheesh currently rests at the crest of an 11 year project and a burgeoning career. With a background in classical piano that underpins his musicianship, he’s made ground on the edges of experimental bass music and its various stylistic tendrils with his own particular gait. For the 77th Rust Music release, we’re excited to host and present his most recent EP, Subconscious.

Through four tracks of low-slung frequencies and rolling, syncopated drum lines, Sheesh ties together mean, razor-edged synthesis, effusive piano melodies, and hefty rhythmic swagger. Switching between driving percussive dashes and laid-back, groovy overtures, the Subconscious EP is a distinctly palatable entry to the Sheesh catalog. For fans and appreciators of refined sound design and tightly wound songwriting fundamentals, make sure to check out this latest edition to the Rust’s family of releases on all major listening platforms.

Squalpat & Tygris – Asteroid Blues

Nearly 4 years to the day since the release of Packaging Solutions, Squalpat and Tygris have reimagined their collaborative style with a fresh and succinct lease on sound. Their latest minted work, Asteroid Blues is a two-track EP with both a heavy swing and a lush palette in tow.

Pulling influence from soul, jazz, trip-hop, and contemporary synthesis and production,  Asteroid Blues opens at a high velocity, and closes with a resounding wind-down. Reinvigorating their compositional gait, both tracks are representative of their individual and collaborative evolution, showcasing fluid songwriting, dialed-in synthesis, and rhythmic flair with clear specificity. For fans and appreciators of instrumental electronic music across the spectrum, Asteroid Blues is a must-have release for any discerning catalog.

Zonra - Conviction

Jackson Hale’s Zonra project has earned a well-rounded reputation for the depth, detail, and overall presentation of his minted works. Each release has explored numerous themes in the space of contemporary sound design, broken-beat bass music, and scintillating downtempo collections, giving him an already extremely wide, well-balanced berth of music under his belt. Never content to miss the opportunity for compositional gold, the most recent collection of Zonra works are a significant step away from his more dance floor-friendly interpretations: Conviction is an ambient exploration of generative synthesis, modular hardware, and emotive overtures, and The Rust Music is extraordinarily excited to give yet another Zonra release a proper introduction.

Conviction comprises three syncretic tracks, each a separate movement in an elongated presentation of the central piano theme. Across a run-time of 20 minutes, the dominant phrase evolves and morphs in accordance with envelopes triggered by Zonra’s physical modular systems, creating a tapestry of rich, interwoven textures and tension. Leaving behind the toil of tempo and quantization, Zonra once again redefines the upper limit of his skills and catalog, producing a stunning piece of contemporary music that sets him a step ahead of the pack. Whether you’ve been following along with the steady stream of Zonra releases over the years, or you’re just tuning in for the first time, the Conviction EP is one record that’ll you have you tuning in over and over again.

With a notable focus on downbeat grooves and accentuated melodies, Aquiver's latest EP, Feeding Organs, comes as a fresh interpretation of time-tested psychedelic motifs with a spirited dancefloor energy.

Packing 5 original tracks and 1 thorough remix, Feeding Organs comes in with a modest runtime and an impressive palette of tones right out of the gate. 3420 - Tenacious

Carrying the forward momentum of hybridized studio productions and live acts, the multi-instrumentalist trio 3420 has proven to be a powerhouse both on and off the stage. Hailing from Denver, Colorado, they're already right at home in a city and a potential fan base that's served as ground zero for live producer-driven acts across the last decade. Stirring numerous musical disciplines into one super-charged package, there's little territory they won't cover with their signature flare. With a clear dedication to pushing their formula and style wherever and whenever possible, The Rust is proud to host the release of their latest EP; Tenacious.

Spanning five distinct flavors across five unique compositions, Tenacious puts the triple brain-trust of 3420 on direct display. Ranging from hip-hop and DnB rhythms to brolic bass music motifs, the band manages to find the instrumental pocket of even their most digitally-driven productions. With organic drum timbres, six-string guitar, contemporary sound design, and the know-how to mingle it all without oversaturating any individual element, the progression of each composition slides almost effortlessly into the next. If tenacity is the goal, then Tenacious is the dialed-in journey that gets 3420 over that line, and if you've got the same appetite for novel blends and pocketed jams that we do, then you're in for a serious treat.

Langwidj - Escape Plan

Artwork by Vibrational Perspectives

Hailing from Tallahassee, Florida, the upstart producer Langwidj has been coming correct with a smattering of glitch-hop and splayed-out bass music for the last few years. Continuing their dovetailed combination of happy accidents, artifacts, and sculpted synthesis, the latest plate of Langwidj tracks balance weight and impact with abundant compositional risk. As a result, The Rust is incredibly excited to host the release of their latest EP; Escape Plan.

Fusing an abundance of textures with off-kilter arrangements, Escape Plan spans a tight grouping of styles, touching on half-time, neuro, and timeless downtempo motifs. Each of the three tracks is an entirely self-contained experience, giving listeners an expansive, topical taste of each particular lane. Juggling effusive melodies, blistering low-end, and rambunctious rhythms that stretch from an earnest swing to a vicious breakdown, Escape Plan is a precision EP designed for discerning listeners, and is surely just a taste of future Langwidj developments.

Beatroots - Reset Remedy

Artwork by Tom White.

With an inscrutable focus on exploring the depth of electronic composition, the Welsh producer and songwriter Beatroots has an obvious and honed-in skill set that shines through a multitude of moods and styles. With nearly a decade of tracks marking his discography, the Beatroots sound has evolved alongside the evolving science of sound design and engineering fundamentals, making the project a veritable waypoint for the many congruent paths of electronic music. With that dynamic in mind, The Rust is incredibly excited to host the release of his latest LP, Reset Remedy.

Bridging all gaps between intense and pensive compositions, Reset Remedy is an expansive, meticulous expression of minimalism and instrumental interplay; few moments in any track involve a plethora of tones, utilizing the call and response between select textures and timbres. Where one synthesizer ends, another begins with choice overlap, giving an otherwise minimalist approach a very maximalist impact. Juggling a mixture of eclectic trip-hop, drum and bass, and downtempo rhythms, the album sets itself apart from the pack through its elaborative and evolving songwriting in both steady-beat and broken-beat motifs. For fans of provocative and expressive electronic music, Beatroots’ Reset Remedy has you covered across a wide and satisfying swath of sonic territory.

Ekorce - Puzzled

Fusing an amalgam of psybient textures and motifs, glitch fundamentals, and rapacious rhythms, the French producer Kyrian Nicolay-Kritter has spent the better part of the last 8 years chipping away at the creative clay of his musicianship. Consequently, The Rust is incredibly proud to host the most recent results of his on-going audiophiliac designs and compositions; the four track Puzzled EP.

Oozing with stereophonic synthesis, syncopated percussive runs, and crystal clear fidelity, Puzzled begins and ends with distinct modes and striking harmony. With the EP’s pendulum swinging from weighty to weightless and back again, each song sits in its own dedicated lane, filling out the release with succinct grip of sound design and emulsive songwriting. Written with fans of downtempo, scintillating productions in mind, Ekorce’s Puzzled EP is guaranteed to become a mainstay in any curated listening rotation.

V/A - Oxidized, Vol. 3

Artwork by Mocktail

The Oxidized compilation series is a charity project we have been working on since the inception of The Rust Music, with Oxidized, Vol. 1 being our very first label release in February 2017. At the end of each year we select a new charity, aid organization, or non-profit, to which all proceeds from the series are donated. In the past we have donated to organizations focusing on natural disaster aid, environmental restoration and preservation, as well as civil/human rights advocates and COVID-19 relief efforts on local, national, and international levels. Proceeds from the Oxidized series in 2022 and 2023 will be donated to support equal rights to healthcare and access to abortion.

Across the last 6 years, we've recurrently tapped into a network of both our roster talent and our close associates across the experimental electronic music spectrum to craft our first two Oxidized compilations. Now, for the final entry in the Oxidized Trilogy, we've brought together 32 producers, songwriters, and musicians from the US, the UK, Germany and Georgia to craft 28 tracks that cross through a medley of motifs in Hip-Hop, Drum & Bass, Downtempo, and more. Please relax and enjoy this curated selection of moods and attitudes, courtesy of The Rust Music and our extended kinfolk.

crawdad sniper - Squid Pro Quo

Artwork: Andrew Bjorke (aab_stract)

Hailing from the D.C. area and falling back on a lifetime of experience behind the drum kit, Crawdad Sniper is a producer/DJ with a significant rhythmic bent. Already boasting a modest catalog of hip-shaking tunes and sprinkles of funkadelic electronic music, his latest collection of tracks fields sharp sound design and pocketed phasing with a polished profile. In a bid to start the new off with a righteous groove, The Rust is especially excited to host his newly minted EP, Squid Pro Quo

Tight, pinpoint percussion dominates the runtime of Squid Pro Quo, serving as the consistent foundation for his rhythmic and melodic arrangements. Taking clear advantage of his time as a drummer, it’s simultaneously the backbone and foreground of the EP, with each hit taking up generous sonic bandwidth. Each track flares with an alternate series of forward and laid back attitudes while keeping the focus squarely on kinetics; splices of throaty synthesis mingle with staccato lead lines and harmonized chord plucks, closing the distance between hard hitting neuro motifs and pronounced songwriting fundamentals. There’s an almost liquid quality to the EP’s engineering, producing a listening experience that is as hygienic as it is engaging, and betraying a significant dedication to cleanliness as well as design. For fans and appreciators of rhythmic inertia, funk motifs, and generous synthesis, Crawdad Sniper’s Squid Pro Quo is guaranteed to satisfy.
